MOTHER OF AN ADHD SON

Soli is a qualified teacher with a B.Educ Psychology degree. She has 30 years teaching experience culminating in her role as Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) in a large school in London. One of her first jobs she was told to watch out for a ‘lively little lad’ (teacher speak for ‘trouble’) yet she found this pupil to be engaging, interesting and full of original ideas. This was her first encounter with ADHD until she then had a son of her own with ADHD who she has brought up to be a successful young man in his early 20s.

Soli is passionate about helping Headstuff ADHD Liberty clients and their families when the children are still at school but getting into trouble. If these issues are ignored it can so often end up in the child being excluded, getting involved in crime and being on that slippery slope to young offender institutes.

Soli really understands how ADHD parents feel. She has been that person standing in the playground waiting to pick up her son – being ignored by other parents because her own child has been labelled as ‘naughty’ and ‘trouble’. She knows exactly what it feels like when your child doesn’t get invited on play dates or to birthday parties and the other parents act like it’s all your fault because obviously you are a bad parent. She has stood in fear as yet another teacher approached saying “Mrs Lazarus can I have a quick word with you”!!

Soli endured this for years until that magical day when her son got his diagnosis of ADHD. Now his life ALL made sense. The forgetfulness, the impulsivity, the social difficulties, his poor self-esteem and the problems he had following instructions. Now she was able to work better with the teachers to help and support her son. Yes of course there were still obstacles but he now had the support he deserved.

Soli has now left teaching to support families with children with suspected or diagnosed ADHD. She helps families manage those every day tasks that can be so fraught and challenging. Trying to get a child off a screen takes careful planning!

Soli encourages families to hold up the shield of knowledge, wear resilient knickers and drape on their shoulders the cape of no fear. With that combination, they can be invincible.

For Soli it is an intolerable situation that many teachers have poor or no understanding of ADHD. Soli goes into schools to deliver ADHD training, observe lessons and offer practical solutions to teaching and support staff. The difference a kind and sympathetic teacher can make to a pupil with ADHD cannot be understated.

Soli is very happy to work with parents of any children aged up to 18. She is experienced with Inattentive and Combined ADHD, boys and girls with the condition and also dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia.
